The Crossing

When his mother commits suicide in the winter of 1992, University
of Texas sophomore Joel Grayson represses the circumstances of
her death and his fear that he might be responsible. Using his best
friend, James, as a life line, he manages to create a space for
himself and his art. But the past writhes beneath the surface, and
when his relationship with James becomes sexual and eventually
falls apart, he finds himself suddenly incapable of work. As memories
of his abusive childhood force themselves to the forefront, Joel reaches
out to Adam Atwater, a one night stand laden with possibility. Can Joel
find salvation in Adam? Or will he summon the courage to save himself?
I, Too, Have Suffered in the Garden

Still suffering the fallout of his partner's death from AIDS a dozen
years ago, Adam Atwater tailspins after his fortieth birthday as he
copes with his father's terminal illness, a career from which he derives
little satisfaction, and an affair with a colleague that leaves him further
from his current partner than he ever imagined. As Adam cares for his
father, memories of Bobby's illness resurface, along with guilt for the
infidelity he incurred as his lover lay dying. Tormented by the past,
Adam teeters on the brink of insanity, poised to lose everything he
now holds dear.
